Just 14 miles from Summer Lodge Country Park is one of Cornwall’s most famous educational, ecological and enjoyable visitor attractions – The Eden Project.
The now world famous biomes have risen from what was once simply a disused clay pit and created a garden of Eden in Cornwall. Well, several gardens actually, as each of the massive domes house whole ecosystems from different parts of the globe, and the rest of the site is dedicated to the different landscapes and gardens of Cornwall.
The Rainforest Biome, the largest greenhouse in the world at a towering 180 feet tall and covering an impressive 1.56 hectares, is kept at a tropical temperature and humidity and is home to over a thousand plants from across the mainland and islands off of West Africa, South America and Malaysia. With more than twenty displays showing off the flora of these regions, what we use them for and their importance to our planet, visitors of all ages will find something of interest here.
The Eden Project’s Mediterranean Biome is smaller but no less striking as it takes the visitor on a tour of the landscapes of regions across the world with Mediterranean-like climates such as South Africa, California and South West Australia. Traverse the globe in a matter of minutes and experience the wonders that nature has blessed us with.
The Eden Project may have an educational and ecological purpose, but there is no reason why this should be boring. The many exhibits have been created with fun in mind for even the youngest visitors, the state of the art education facility is interactive and family friendly, and the Eden Project hosts numerous events to help make finding out about the world we live in an enjoyable experience – from competitions to concerts and kids events to ice skating the Eden Project has so much to offer.
